I am an avid SharePoint enthusiast who works as an Independent SharePoint Consultant based in Leeds, United Kingdom. I am one of the organisers of the Yorkshire SharePoint User Group in the United Kingdom. I have been designing and building SharePoint solutions since 2006.

>iThink SharePoint

>Well finally I have gone and done it.
I have started up my own limited company, iThink SharePoint.

The idea of iThink SharePoint will be to start developing useful SharePoint products and provide consultancy/development on an adhoc basis.

I have had some cool discussions with a number of companies in my area and we’ll see where that takes off. Shortly I will have www.ithinksharepoint.com running which will developed on SharePoint 2007 of course!

My background really started in 2003 when I was made redundant from a Video Network manufacturer where I headed up the IT department before getting bored and moved to developing Video Network management systems in Visual C++.

Since then I started contracting and providing consultancy services for Windows Server, Active Directory, Exchange, VMWare etc for 3 years before discovering SharePoint Portal Server 2003 in 2004. Since then, I took a year out and came back to the Beta of SharePoint 2007, I was pretty impressed back then and have now made it my full time job to understand all things SharePoint.
Sad I know..! (my girlfriend is currently pointing out that no one will read this if its so boring!)

Anyway I thought I’d let you know where I am from….

>Book Recommendation

>I read quite a few computer books, I think actually I might be obsessed with SharePoint to be honest. Yesterday I went down for a client meeting in London and took the train down and came back via Manchester. Fortunately to keep the train journey interesting (sic) I took with me Ted Pattison and Daniel Larson’s book “Inside Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (Pro Developer)”.
I read the thing from cover to cover in a day… I have to say this has to be the best SharePoint book I have read so far, well done guys.

I have been learning SharePoint 2007 for a year now and as you will eventually see on this site have figured out a lot of things but these guys have cleared up so many points.

For example when managing users in an SPWeb object there are 3 different functions:-
SPWeb.Users
SPWeb.SiteUsers
SPWeb.AllUsers

SPWeb.Users will contain users who have been explicitly added to the SPWeb
SPWeb.SiteUsers contains all the users in the site collection, so any users who have been added to the Site Collection
SPWeb.AllUser will contain all the users who have access to the site including Site Collection users and also (and this is the cool bit) users who are in SharePoint Groups and AD Groups. I havent tested out the last bit but will be doing shortly. I let you know how we get on!

Anyway if you want to develop with SharePoint get Ted and Dan’s book.
